Good conversation. Here is my take on this. The problem that Christensen points out both in his book and even more so in person (I have attended the two conferences he has done with George Gilder) is that the whole of a company's management structure, etc. is geared toward the products their customers want, which are usually the ones which produce the highest profitability.

So even if top management sees the need to change direction, the message gets greeted with a lot of resistance as if moves down to where the work gets done. This is why he says companies need to move the disruptive product lines outside if they want to give them a chance to succeed. It is a big problem to solve, even when it is well known. EMC has a difficult road to hoe to move into NAS successfully.
