There are a number of reasons why CPQ would not be in the running here. First is DELL's long standing deep partnership with Intel - this is almost a joint venture and Intel needs that close relationship. Second is the Intel Linux push - CPQ is pushing Linux mostly for Alpha, and then with Samsung - not likely to be a good match for Intel there.

Finally, and most importantly, CPQ is doing actual joint investment with MSFT in the ASP space, as the recent Digex announcement showed. They also have similar programs with other ASPs, and the big play with Cable & Wireless... and MSFT can't be too happy with the Intel Linux thrust.

So I see CPQ and MSFT lining up on one side of this market, pushing the MSFT stack primarily, with CPQ pushing Alpha as the Unix alternative, and Intel / DELL on the other side, pushing Intel architecture for both MS and Unix environments, with a decided preference for Linux...
