RE: "there should be no x86 legacy software."

Hi SaturnV,

What's this about you and me being confused with each other in several posts? : )

There are a lot of x86 software tools for product engineering.

RE: "given the large number of potential x86 alternate sources"

Especially in situations of shortages.

HI Saturn 5,

Currently the most commonly used applications in PCs are MSFT works other than games. These are what sell most PCs & upgrades. Since it is graphical User Interface based people tend to use it a lot, even though it is extremely painful to use it. Linux will not make inroads into large scale market unless people start using office works on linux. Currently the compatibility problems are making data transfer between MS works & linux based tools. But the greatest thing going for Linux is open source and some companies like Red Hat, etc willing to support a code stream and port any new applications wanted by business.

Transmeta chip is interesting variable to web appliance. They probably are earlier into the market than intel products. Which gives them advantage, if lot of new application software gets developed for this product in its native instruction set then it will be interesting battle for intel. Again the open source of linux will make the entry by intel much more easy. Interesting scenario to play out in the future.
