For simplicity, the closing prices on Dec 1, 1999 were used. That was aWed, the third day of trading under CDNX. Only stocks that closed at .10 or more, with 10k or more of volume were selected, resulting in a total of 1143 stocks. This was done using CSW.

These were imported into an Excel spreadsheet. Using a PCQuote feed into Excel, the latest trade price was retrieved. 127 instruments had to be discarded because PCQuote did not like them. These were mostly .UN and .DB listings over $10.

Once the stocks were divided into price categories the two best and worst performers were discarded -- i.e., 4 stocks per group -- a simple attempt to avoid skewing the data. This left us with 992 stocks. Of these, we had 597 advancers.

Here are the results:

TSE

.10-.495 .50-5.00 5.01-25 >25
~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~
Number of stocks: 95 214 195 87
Overall increase: 29% 18% 19% 20%
Top performers: XLX,SLX MYT,HML IW,IFN BLD,IFM
CDNX
.10-.495 .50-5.00 5.01-25 >25
~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~
Number of stocks: 247 154 too few too few
Overall increase: 27% 37%
Top performers: TMC,LIR WV,SYD.U

And the winner by a full length is CDNX puppy stocks. The prize goes to our queen of puppies: Lola. She was first with the correct response on the Cdn-Puppy thread. After contacting her she declined the prize and asked for the cash value in its place. Figures...

During the same period we have:

SPX: 3%
NDX: 28%
TSE 300: 14%

Cheers. --Allan

One only has to look at the CDNX Index for a good guess. Closed today at 2771.42, and I believe they started at 2000 at the merger. That would be a 38.5% increase overall since late November when they merged. It seems the TSE has been smokin' these last few weeks, but I don't think the 300 Index managed the same percentage.

Thank you Allan but I must share the prize with Shaw ... I'm just a little trigger happy ... I'm the same with my stocks which is unfortunate because I always sell the good ones too soon. Shaw and I tend to pick some great winners but he picks different stocks from what I pick.

But the real winner here is koanhead because he actually reads our posts, buys the stocks and goes to bed. So Shaw and I are going to take up sniffing glue while in our PJs so we can HOLD these stocks long enough to realize the profits! Trying to get us to hold onto a stock for more than a few hours is really difficult.

Lola:)
