Analog Devices sold it's disk drive controller IC business to Adaptec about a year and a half ago, getting out of that business completely. The former chairman of Adaptec is on ADI's board, so there may have been some personal contact there.

There is a very active Western Digital thread here as well as many of the other disk drive and drive head component makers. The desk-top disk market is very competitive. IBM dominates with the leading technology for drive heads (GMR). Western Digital has had its up and downs as market niches come and go. The APM (Applied Magnetics, just declared bankruptcy) is also active and humorous (if you like that kind). The shorts have been fighting the longs for years over there.
