As the fuel celll stocks continue to capture the investment community's attention, I cannot help but think this excitement will find its way over to Catalytica. I have decided to do a complete synopsis of the company's business activities both for my own re-education and to inform anyone who happens to hear about this company from the action in fuel cells. I know that it is not very easy to understand what this company does, and therefore why people should own this stock. They are diversified in their business segments with no easily identifiable connection to suggest why they should be successful in such disparate businesses. Here is my explanation with the intention of conveying information not only about this company, but about the industries in which it operates.

Catalytica is a chemical engineering company. The fundamental element underlying everything that Catalytica does, as its name suggests, is catalysis. The founders and initial consultants (including Nobel Laureate Dr. Henry Taub) were chemical engineers who were experts in catalytic chemical reactions.

The company is aligned along three business units each creating value by using proprietary technologies using catalysis to either accomplish things never before done, or improve processes, making them more efficient using catalysis. Catalytica Pharmaceuticals is a major player in pharmaceutical production. Catalytica Combustion Systems, Inc has developed a system that allows natural gas turbines to operate while producing emissions as low as that seen with fuel cell systems. Catalytica Advanced Technologies is the new product incubator.
