Your reasoning is false, let me give you an example.

Example:

BigTex buys 5000 shares of ELSI at 5, he later sells them for 15 dollars a share for a 10 pt gain and a profit of 50k

YAK shorts 5000 shares of ELSI at 15 he later covers at 5 dollars a share for a 10 pt gain and a profit of 50k

Now as you can see we both make the same $$$$, you don't compare %'s with a short, its not the way its done, mathematically its a whole different ball game.
