Well to me in desktop space the problem with applixware is the look. Well the lack of a sexy look. So even though in my opinion it works well, the look I think causes many to think badly or dismiss it out hand. I'd heard of several stories of sun employees bitching about not using ms-office. The bitching may have been from the lack of some minor feature but the look may have amplified the bitch. Also the earlier versions of Applixware before 4.2.2 may have been a litter rough aournd the edges and caused an initial first bad impression. This kind of bitching may have got sun into staroffice which is very ms-office looking. The new look of applixware 5.0 may be an net positive in desktop acceptance of applixware. But I still see the high value in crm and TM1 tech of Applix.
TM1 is a high barrier to entry and a clear difference in favor of Applix solutions.

Now I also have faith in the idea that good engineering is becoming more and more important relative to marketing as the internet makes it easier for more to know and understand the good and bad of product purchase decisions. Reviews like that of the Linux Journal describe in a common sense user perspective usability and robustness and ease of use versus sexy look and more features and a tendency to crash. To me regular crashing is one feature to far.

I also see a synergistic relationship between Applixware/anyware and crm and TM1 glued together by ELF. The sum of the parts is worth 100 times the components in creating a full featured E-B2B solution.

Home desktop space though may be ruled more by marketing. On the other hand use at home by folks who might actually be paying customers is ruled from office to home.

The next area that I'm trying to decipher is whether Burlington Coat Factory and Schwab will come to be known as jewels of how to do the ultimate in efficient Enterprise business solutions.
