Not necessarily so, going back to the industrial revolution analygies. After the automobile was invented, and popularised, the airplane was invented. While an important invention in it's own right, it never replaced the auto. I remember, in my youth, many and many articles in Popular Science about flying cars. They never materialised. The age of the engine was over! Each technology improved within it's space, but until computers caught hold there was only incremental change in technology and less in social behavior.
