James,

Thanks for the article. I?ve no intent on shooting the messenger ?cause I?ve learned a lot from articles like these.

I don't know who this guy is but ole Paul sounds a little bitter, like he's been getting ~10% ave over the last 10 years or he's one of those poor "Value" fund managers that must just hate their job by now.
I especially like how he describes nearly all techs and telecomms as speculative-no-earnings-concept stocks.
He sounds much like the many CNBC drones that parade across my tv daily preaching "diworsification" (a hedge against ignorance) and pushing slow-growth cyclicals. Even Old School managers like Peter Lynch advocate only holding a handful of stocks.
He does not point out that over the last few years most stocks are flat or down, and a great amount of gains in the indices are from high growth stocks with actual earnings.
He does not point out that institutions are heavy holders, if not majority holders of those stocks.

Made me chuckle.

-JG

Jim, thought you'd enjoy reading what an empassioned Mark Kooler has to say about Paul Merriman's article:

MULAN..You know I was going to respond sometime....I have
two posts...one of Merrimann...and the other on the character of the market....This is my opinion of the
Merriman article....Obviously remember the following...I am
a simple mind...a guy who had to hoe sugar beets to pay my
way through a state college, a guy who was NOT born into
money, wealth or status....I am now a well off, libertarian
polulist....LOL.

Response....

In my opinion this is once again an article written and
published by one of the elitist class who think we as the
middle class are STUPID...INCOMPETANT LEMMINGS...who don't
have the INTELLECT to THINK for OURSELVES........Is that
statement too BLUNT ?????????

Let's examine some of the points....

1. "Five years ago you would see a 1 % move in the NAZ every two weeks...now it's every day"....Uh...maybe because
through the internet technology many of us STUPID MORONS
now have access to information which allow us to MAKE OUR
OWN DECISIONS......This was NOT available to US five years
ago...Five Years ago we were guided by brokers who we were
led to believe they knew what they were doing....We have
now DETERMINED this was all FRAUD...These brokers and
financial advisors were only working on building huge
commission bases, they couldn't tell me what the difference
was from CSCO and SYSCO....

2. Portfolio Manager in New York Times.." I look back at
the past manias....Bowling Stocks of the 1960's, the Tech
stocks of the 1970's, and the Airlines of the 1990's"...

HUH...Did he say BOWLING STOCKS...like in AMF Bowling, like
bowling pins, bowling balls, and bowling alleys...

IS THIS ELITIST comparing the EXPANSION OF THE INTERNET
TECHNOLOGY to the Bowling Industry ???????????? Is he
comparing the expansion of the INTERNET TECHNOLOGY to the
growth of United Airlines, Delta, US Air...That should say
it all..........

Now....what this person should have stated...I was NOT alive when EDISON created the lightbulb, I was NOT alive
when Gutenberg created the Printing Press....I was NOT
alive when FIRE was discovered....Obviously these ELITISTs
do NOT or DON"T Want to accept the power and influence of
the internet...Or should I say...how the internet technologies will allow the lower income and middle class
individuals access to information, power and decision making without being ENSLAVED by them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3. Bollinger...."Everybody is chasing the same 12 stocks"
Huh.....Let me list more than 12...

CMGI NAVI ENGA SILK CMDX ICGE CPTH CSCO SUNW INTC VRSN
EMLX QCOM AOL CMRC PPRO BRCM XLNX TQNT NSM LSI TXN YHOO
EMC AMAT KLA PMCS MSFT DELL CPQ Gateway PHCM....I could go
on and on....Mr. Bollinger needs to understand that there
are many more than 12.....Actually the majority of the
investment community doesn't have a clue what the majority
of the above mentioned stocks do....I haven't even touched
the BIO TECH sector.....

Yes....Mr. Bollinger..there is a sea change..never has there been a combining of the internet technologies with
the advances in Biology and Genetics as there is now !!!!
Is it any wonder Mr. Bollinger that us MORONs in the middle
class don't want to hear about Catapillar, Gillette, Mattel, COKE, etc.........

4. Investors are stating they don't need Mutual Funds they
can chose their own stocks....They believe in the buy high
and sell higher theory....

HUH.....maybe their confusion could be clarified if they
begin to truly understand the importance of the demographic
pattern shifts occuring concurently with the internet and
biotech explosions......

Let me explain about buying low and selling high....I will
use one stock...CMGI...I know of many posters who practice
the TRUE principle of INVESTING...BUY REAL LOW, HOLD, and
SELL WHEN AN INFINITE RETURN HAS BEEN ACHIEVED......

Should I list the names...NBN, Premier, BikerBum, and many
others.....

Let's assume my wife and I went into a Merrill Lynch broker on January 2, 1998 to fund our IRA's with $2000...Since we are in the middle class we could qualify.
So my wife opens an account for her, and I for me.

The Broker (Someone like Mr. Merriman) suggests to me that
I should buy a mutual fund....My wife being completely irrational decides to buy 71 shares of CMGI...Now two years
later I compare the current value of the two IRA's....my
wife's IRA has 4544 shares of CMGI valued at 120 /share or
a value of $545,000. Me..I have an IRA which has a return
annualy of 20 %, my IRA is worth $2880....

RESULT....MY WIFE IS RETIRED and being pursued by good
looking young guys.....Me..I still have to work selling
pizzas, mortgages, real estate, etc...no good looking
young women are chasing me...that's for sure...the only
person chasing me is the broker trying to get me to buy and
sell more mutual funds for their commission.

Point 5....The new paradigm..."This is the same story I've
been hearing since 1960".....

Uh....go back to point 1...were you around when electricity
was discovered, fire, printing press, steam engine, etc...
NO....internet and biotech is NOT THE SAME as BOWLING PINS.

Bottom line Summary....In three years...this guy who used
to be a migrant laborer hoeing sugar beets will be able to
retire with interest payments far exceeding the funds I will ever need to live on....This migrant laborer will be
using assets to promote and encourage the empowerment of
all the lower income and middle class people I can find...

Yes...I will be the worse nightmare for the Elite in this
country...I will be working with the TRUE GRIT of America
and loving every minute of it....

Oh yeah....Mr. Merriman..he will still be writing asinine
articles like this one.....
