The semiconductor industry is an EXTREMELY CAPITAL AND R&D INTENSIVE BUSINESS.

That pretty much sums it up. Also, the reported earnings are significantly bloated by virtue of the fact that Intel keeps a significant part of its payroll (stock options) off the income statement.

Note that the 6-8 billion in profit is after R&D expenses, but before charges such as all the investments, and corporate aquisitions.
