(off topic) What to do when you can not boot your hard drive.

My DOS 5 Windows 3.1 486 33 MHz 220 MegByte Hard Drive
8 years old
never had a problem
but waiting, has to happen sometime
and today
not able to boot hard drive C:
looked at the BIOS, and all written in ok
put in boot'able floppy into A:
boot'ed ok
tried to go to C:, and "not there"
glass 1/2 full as this rather than hard errors
so hopefully no head crash or mechanical problem
so contained inside my little boot'able floppy
was that in A:\DOS I put the UNFORMAT DOS file
and in the root of this floppy
I long ago placed a copy of the C: partition file
thru using DOS's MIRROR file
and then used the UNFORMAT file mentioned above
with the /partn switch
and yes the hard drive was accessed and BINGO, alls ok now.

Sure easier and better than re format and re load .

I'am sure Windows 95 etc has the same "easy" to do things.
Might work most times,
and may have worked in some times,
this partition save/restore,
in those times assumed incorrectly boot hard disk was lost,
when it was not.
