No Ox, It's not quite as you say ! There is good upside potential which isn't there case with a long put. Why get out of the short put with a loss when you can make a profit from the hedge position (providing you get into it as soon as you feel the put position is threatened ?)

My options are for June expiry. A lot can happen between now and then. I feel I have protection AND significant profit potential
