Hi Toni, I read about this somewhere before. I don't think it's anything we have to worry about. The banks and merchants have a big investment in their debit/smart card hardware that they aren't about to throw away. Any of the stuff I read about adopting new technology always has a few lines about protecting the installed investment. I think what we will see in the near future is a push to embedded chip smart cards to replace the mag stripe cards currently in use. The new pin pads IVI is installing (I see them everywhere here in mid town Ontario) all have that little slot to accept a smart card :)
