ONly becomes an issue if the account is not square. Day traders typically square a trade each day and wash sales won't be a problem.

Position traders have more to worry about, since they can be holders for several days/weeks,etc and cross the yearly boundary with open positions.

It is a closed loss position followed by an open positive position that makes the loss have to carryforward.
