Hoya, not always, Kodak had to pay $6 Billions to Polaroid (later it may have been reduced), GE paid about $150 MM to Fonar, The auto industry paid some $50 MM to the guy that invented the "intermittent" wind shield wiper and the list goes on. All these were judgements, many other are settled for whatever they think the fair value might be if the "infringer" sees the writing on the wall.
