OT Have had some extensive discussions on this very topic. Why is so much medical care in America so mediocre? Is it partly because medicine has become a business in a capitalist society? How many ethical decisions can a doctor make when he's earning 40K a day to perform surgeries? Will he look at the patient as an eye or a jawbone which he can cut and make $ out of...or as a whole person, whose health problems he might treat over decades? That kind of doctor seems to be disappearing. And that's probably the kind of doctor that most of us would want.

Not directing this at anybody persay--and I do believe we need these specialists. What medicine and technology can do is miraculous. Nonetheless, from time I've spent in Australia I have to say their health care system and their doctors are MUCH better overall. And of course, even their top doctors make a lot less $ than ours.

Hi Steve:

You are sadly mistaken about your Ophthalmologist's income. He may charge $1000 for a cataract surgery but he probably gets paid only around $300. his overhead expenses for this run about 65%. Your estimate of his "Take Home" $20,000 per day is grossly exaggerated.

An average physician in private practice collects 55% of his charges after dealing with the insurance companies and the Government. If I was getting paid my charges, I would not be flirting with the stock market.

Physicians are very well off financially. They are not complaining for their income. However, they also invest a large amount of money in their education and deal with real human lives - and yes, Lawyers. By the time they are ready to start their practice and family after 10 years of post graduate education, they are well into their 30's. A graduate coming out of a Business School at a younger age is much better off than a physician.

Regards:

GP

ULTRA OT
Dr. Detail,
Once, when I was a new bride I made Swedish meatballs and accidentally put in powdered sugar instead of cornstarch to thicken the sauce. They didn't thicken, tasted horrendous. I tried passing them off on my husband but he was not that stupid. Nobody died, although the shame was great.

To whom would I report that the pharmacy gave me the wrong medicine. If it wasn't the second time I had gotten this medicine I wouldn't have known. They said it is the medicine next to it on the shelf!!! There must be some sort of better system for checking that. This happened this morning and I don't want to go back to them even so they can fix it.

OTOT I am familiar with the individual cases. In general your comments regarding salaries for the average physician or surgeon are incorrect. This is generally available information.Your comments are not applicable for the average physician salary irrespective of specialty. For the record I do have friends that do care for members of the Saudi Royal Family. I also feel that it is incorrect to represent to a young person that this is what is waiting over the rainbow. The motivations are wrong and that rainbow could disappear in a flash. It sends the wrong message.
I also don't wish to discuss financial specifics. I will simply sat that I have been very fortunate in my practice and in the market. I will keep this civil and stand by my statements. Facts are facts.
My background is extensive and their are over 1,500 physicians in our county. I think that serves as a realistic data base.
