China Telecom's mobile group is now called China Mobile....expect 60m users by year-end 2000. asia-links.com China Mobile Targets 20 MLN New Users BEIJING, Jan 21 Asia Pulse - China Mobile will strive to recruit 20 million users this year, bringing its total up to 60 million, according to the newly-established mobile phone operator's strategy for 2000. Aiming to become the world's top-notch telecom operator, China Mobile plans to sign international automatic roaming protocols with another 30 overseas companies in 18 countries, after which it will be able to offer roaming service in the telecom networks of 110 overseas operators in 65 countries. It also expects to realize 180 billion yuan (US$21.76 billion) worth of mobile phone traffic volume and 103.8 billion yuan in mobile communication service income. This year, it will expand its mobile switching capacity by 28 million lines to reach 99.95 million lines, while adding 1.2 million wireless channels, bringing the total up to 3.44 million. In a bid to achieve these targets, it plans to invest 61.6 billion yuan in fixed assets. In the meantime, the company will make greater efforts to build a modern enterprise system by changing its management system that has been operating under the planned economy. It will strive to improve the operation efficiency, and strengthen its network's integrated telecom capacity, extending the network to all the areas at and above the county level and economically-developed villages and towns and serving a total of 80 million users in three years. It will also develop more service to meet the demand of consumers. China Mobile has become totally independent of China Telecom. (XIC)
