>> They have the Desktop XV8(announced 23jul9, expected vol prod Sep99) and XV10(announced 99, expected
vol prod Dec99). I am passing this "official PR" info along; I cannot claim to have seen any in the channel, but
I don't really see much presence from them at all for any product.

Well this is exactly what I mean. The PR announcement comes out, but the actual product does not. At least not at $130 for a 10GB or $180 for 20 GB. Meaning it is tough to make these in volume. Which I interpret to mean that the disk drive business is getting very tough to get into, meaning that at last we do not need to worry about low tech assemblers swamping the market every time the currency goes their way. So now we just have to worry about demand, which I think will be high and get higher every day.

TBowl,
what is more difficult in terms of continuing investment and R&D:
suspension
Head/Stack
Media
Integration
Software
Transfer Protocols (UDMA/UWSCSI/Fibre channel)

Why doesn't Fujitsu buy the RDRT/HMTT solution like Maxtor?
