Rains, snow dampen drought fears in western U.S.
By Spencer Swartz

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Sustained rain and a series of healthy January snowstorms over the past week have cut drought concerns in the U.S. Pacific Northwest -- and thrilled skiers, who are finally getting the winter workout they've wanted.

``Since last Wednesday we've gotten 57 inches (1.4 metres) of snow. In the last 24 hours we've gotten just slightly over a foot (0.3 metres),' said Monica Bandows, a spokeswoman for the Heavenly ski resort near Lake Tahoe. ``We are definitely catching up and back to a more normal snowpack for this time of year.'

Meteorologists said northern California, Oregon and Washington state were finally enjoying much-needed precipitation after a dry early winter had raised fears of a possible summer drought.(cont)
