New Paper-to-Digital Solution From Adobe Unleashes Knowledge Trapped In Paper Documents
Company Advances ePaper Solutions With Introduction of Acrobat Capture 3.0

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- To help companies unleash the knowledge trapped in paper documents, Adobe Systems (Nasdaq: ADBE) today announced the availability of Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) Capture(R) 3.0 software. The latest addition to Adobe(R) ePaper(R) Solutions product family, Acrobat Capture digitally captures an exact representation of paper documents and transforms them into compact, searchable, cross-platform Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files. Whether needing to integrate volumes of documentation and reports, signed legal contracts and medical records, the software bridges the gap between paper and digital workflows.

There is no question that the Internet has become a critical component in running today's businesses and government entities, yet paper documents continue to play a primary role in everyday business. Most organizations grapple with vast amounts of paper, posing a host of storage, access and retrieval challenges. Acrobat Capture software streamlines the paper-to-digital process from start to finish with a host of powerful new capabilities that automate workflows, improve document content recognition, verify and correct information, and easily scale on multiple processors to meet high throughput requirements.

"While physical paper is not going away anytime soon, there is clearly a need to efficiently integrate paper with existing digital workflows," said Claude Ezran, director, ePaper(R) Solutions, Adobe Systems Incorporated. "For any organization that manages critical paper documents, Acrobat Capture 3.0 allows them to easily make strategic business information stored on paper readily accessible and reusable to anybody who needs it -- a very compelling value proposition."

Ideally suited for paper-intensive industries such as pharmaceutical, legal, defense, aerospace, medical markets as well as government organizations, the new version of Acrobat Capture offers breakthroughs in processing speed. By spreading the tasks over multiple workstations, including multi-processor computers and balancing the workload between them, Acrobat Capture 3.0 can easily accommodate any job -- no matter how large. Since Acrobat Capture 3.0 software is an Adobe PDF solution, it is a better solution for knowledge documents than TIFF. While both formats preserve the look and feel of original paper documents, Acrobat Capture 3.0 produces Adobe PDF files that are smaller, more easily searchable and navigable than TIFF files.

Acrobat Capture 3.0 software is delivered in two versions designed to meet diverse market requirements. Acrobat Capture 3.0 Personal Edition software, which runs on a single computer as a standalone application, allows users to convert up to 20,000 searchable Adobe PDF pages. Customers can purchase additional pages. Acrobat Capture 3.0 Cluster Edition runs on a load balanced cluster of multiple workstations to accommodate high volume requirements. The Cluster Edition software provides the ability to convert an unlimited number of pages.

With a robust software development kit and application programming interface, Acrobat Capture 3.0 is easy to integrate with document workflow software, fax and e-mail applications and scanning software. In addition, users can develop a Web interface for remote submission of OCR jobs. Support for Open Document Management API (ODMA), which is widely used in the knowledge management industry, and metadata enables easy integration with more than 20 document management systems.

Pricing and Availability

Acrobat Capture 3.0 Personal Edition has an expected estimated U.S. street price of $699 and will be available in mid-February, 2000. Acrobat Capture 3.0 Cluster Edition has an estimated U.S. street price of $7,000 per processor and is immediately available through Adobe's standard distribution channels. Both products require Windows NT Workstation and are available with an English user interface only (OCR support for 16 language dictionaries). Acrobat Capture 2.0 software will continue to be offered as an entry-level solution to Windows 95/98 users.
