Earnings est. of $0.16 Whisper of $0.18.

One of the quarterly results that investors will watch closely on January 26 will
be that from JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ:JDSU - Quotes, News, Boards).
Analysts expect JDS to earn $0.16 per share in its fiscal 2000 second quarter
ended December 30, which would double year earlier levels.

In the last two quarters, the company has met or slightly exceeded
estimates, so don't look for an earnings blowout. The whisper number calls for
the company to earn $0.18 a share.

The fiber-optic equipment maker's shares have been surging, even after it
agreed to pay a significant premium to acquire rival E-Tek Dynamics
(NASDAQ: ETEK - Quotes, News, Boards). Shares of JDS rose from around
$50 to a recent $239 in just three months. By Friday, the stock lost a little
altitude, closing at $233.13. To justify those gains, management will have to
give a remarkably upbeat presentation. Shares now trade for 362 times the
June 2000 fiscal year estimates, and 251 times 2001 estimates.

If the company doesn't meet the whisper number, the stock could take
a hit.
