The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Jan. 22, edition that fuel-cell
stocks, such Global Thermoelectric and Ballard Power Systems, advanced
Friday after its was revealed that Microsoft chairman Bill Gates's private
investment firm, Cascade Investment, has taken a 5-per-cent stake in
Avista, of Spokane, Wash., a developer of fuel-cell power plants for the
residential market. The Globe's Peter Kennedy writes that Legg Mason Wood
Walker analyst Ronald Tanner says many stock market players view Mr. Gates,
the richest man in the world, as a very shrewd investor, and as a result
mirror his market moves. Analysts warn that fuel-cell stocks have risen so
quickly that some may be in for a fall once investors begin to focus in on
which companies stand the best chance of bringing their technology to
market. Mr. Tanner says fuel-cell stocks have come so far so quickly that
many are beginning to take on valuations that resemble Internet stocks.
Investors may be taking their cue from William Ford, chairman of Ford
Motor, who sees "major business opportunity" in fuel-cell technology.
