Compaq and Altiris Announce
Simple-to-Use Solutions for PC Management And Deployment

Companies Sign Technology and Distribution Agreement

HOUSTON and LINDON, Utah, Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ -
news) has entered into a technology and distribution agreement with Altiris, Inc. to jointly deliver a
unique suite of best-in- class PC management and software deployment products that dramatically
reduce the time, costs and headaches associated with day-to-day software management of client PCs.

The two companies announced the immediate availability of three products: Altiris express(TM) v4.1, PC
Transplant(TM) for Compaq and PC Transplant Pro. These PC management solutions build on the
Compaq and Altiris suite of PC products and tools that significantly simplify PC installation and
management, thereby making Compaq PCs easier and more economical to own and manage than ever
before.

''As we head into the year, deployment tools are the cornerstone for reducing the complexity of
managing PC environments as well as ownership costs,'' said Kevin Knox, Research Director at
GartnerGroup. ''By using these new tools and technologies, enterprises can reduce new PC setup and
installation costs by as much as $103,000, or 55 percent per year, for a typical 2500-user enterprise.''

Altiris eXpress v4.1: Powerful, Easy-to-Use Management Solution

Altiris eXpress v4.1 vastly simplifies the process and key operational tasks of software deployment and
ongoing software management throughout the PC lifecycle. Setting new benchmarks for ease of use,
with a single intuitive Windows-based, drag and drop console interface and powerful wizards, this
comprehensive tool provides customers with full lifecycle software management and automates the
most cumbersome and challenging aspects of PC deployment and management.

According to Mike Ratermann, manager of network support at First American CREDCO, the nation's
leading provider of specialized credit reports, ''The simplicity of Altiris eXpress sets it apart from other
solutions. It also integrates easily into our environment and can manage Compaq as well as other
brands effortlessly. We expect this tool to significantly lower CREDCO's costs associated with both
initial out-of-the-box deployment and lifecycle management.''

An ideal complement to Microsoft Windows 2000 deployment, Altiris eXpress v4.1 copies a designated
set of files (called an ''image'') from one computer and transfers them to one or more computers. In
large businesses where hundreds of PCs all may need to have the same image, deployment from a
single computer with a master image can be done easily and efficiently. In addition, Altiris eXpress v.4.1
can deploy updates to images, and backup and restore images.

Based on industry standards such as Intel's Wired for Management, Altiris eXpress v4.1 works with
Compaq PCs as well as PCs from other vendors and complements existing management solutions
including Microsoft SMS. The Altiris eXpress v4.1 console and agent can be downloaded free from the
Compaq web site. The console will manage any Compaq PC client on which the agent is installed free
for 30 days, with permanent licensing available for purchase from Compaq or Altiris.

To further ease the integration of Compaq PCs into any environment, Compaq will pre-install the Altiris
management agent on its commercial PC product lines. The first Compaq products to include the
pre-installed agent are the Compaq iPAQ devices, which will begin shipping by the end of January.

PC Transplant: Easy Migration for Personal Settings and Data

PC Transplant speeds up and greatly simplifies PC migration and rollouts by automatically transferring
user data, Windows operating system and network settings, and settings for key applications --
including the Microsoft Office suite -- to a user's new PC. These tools also support migration across
Microsoft client operating systems, thereby simplifying operating-system upgrades. Designed to restore
the user configurations to a familiar state after a hardware or operating system upgrade, PC Transplant
products quickly bring users back to full productivity. Two versions of PC Transplant are available from
Compaq-PC Transplant for Compaq and PC Transplant Pro. PC Transplant for Compaq, which can be
used to transfer data and settings to a new Compaq PC, is free and can be downloaded from the
Compaq web site. Both Compaq and Altiris offer PC Transplant Pro, which includes advanced features
for managing the entire migration process. This includes operating system and application installation,
PC and network setup, and support for multi-vendor PCs.

These tools are supported on Compaq Deskpro PCs, Professional Workstations, Armada Portables,
and Compaq iPAQ devices. They are immediately available and can be downloaded from the Compaq
web site at compaq.com.

Future Joint Development PlansCompaq and Altiris will continue to work closely and will be integrating
Altiris technologies into Compaq's powerful suite of web-based platform management tools (Insight
Manager LC and Insight Manager XE) later this year. In addition, Compaq and Altiris are working with
Intel to further control the software deployment process by integrating Boot Integrity Services (BIS) into
Compaq commercial PC products and Altiris eXpress. For example, BIS technology can be used to
verify the integrity of software as it is deployed over the network. BIS operates in conjunction with the
Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) feature that is incorporated today in Altiris eXpress and Compaq
Commercial PC products. Both BIS and PXE technologies are part of the Wired for Management 2.0
initiative created by Intel.
