(off topic) Zeev, "A rose by any other name..." substitute schmuck for rose ? Warning/Notice/Sorry - I'm not good at how people identify themselves above and beyond my view that each person is equal to all others, and I view each person based only on how they treat themselves and all others in those things worded as good, bad, evil, nice, care, compassion, .... so I hope this post to you Zeev is not "off" what you consider proper. If so, I apology and will take it as a lesson learned. Doug From: ole 49r OT: ANYONE? I'm hoping a person of the Jewish faith will help me out with a colloquialism... I'm searching for a yiddish term that would characterize someone as a perennial griper, fault finder...preferably referring to a member of the male gender. Is there a perjorative in Yiddish for a male "b*tcher?" Any help? I'm at a loss for words... Private Message responses "OK" Thanks! O/49r From: ole 49r ANYONE... Still no help with me on my yiddish vocabulary question...c'mon people...it's a simple one with a simple answer...I promise not to refer to whomever responds with that "epithet" <grin> To: ole 49r From: Rarebird The Yiddish word your looking for is "nudnick". I'm not sure on the spelling but that's it. Pronunciation: Nud as in hood; nick as in Saint Nick. The meaning in Jewish is one who is always complaining, a pest. It's used toward men and women. To: Rarebird From: ole 49r RE: nudnick...too cool. THANKS! And just in the "nick" of time. O/49r To: Rarebird From: Casaubon hmmm, I thought "nudnick" was more of a know-nothing. I was thinking the apropriate term was a "Kvech". I'm no expert though. To: ole 49r From: dale sinor Ole49 One word that comes to mind was Mench. But I think that has more positive connotations. you might try asking over on this thread as they had a discussion about the word schmuck last week.techstocks.com . To: Casaubon From: Rarebird A "Kvech" is one who is always complaining; but not necessarily in a bothersome or pesty way. It can concern aches and pains and be justifiable. A "nudnick" is more severe or intense than a "Kvetch" and takes it to the next level. The complaining here is often rooted in ignorance or lack of knowledge. That is where you get " the know nothing" from. It's included in "nudnick". To: dale sinor From: Rarebird "Mench" means a real man, honest, upright, a man of his word, honorable; a "Mensch" does the right thing in his dealings with other people.
