* It's official - the Clinton Administration is keeping the U.S. closed to Mexican trucks despite the Jan. 1 deadline of the North American Free Trade Agreement. See
truckinginfo.com.
* French trucking company owners blockaded roads at the
border Monday and Tuesday as they protested high fuel prices and a controversial new law shortening the work week to 35 hours. The French government worked out a deal to end the roadblocks, but truck drivers aren't happy with the compromise and are threatening their own strike for Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, when the new law goes into effect. See the International News section at
truckinginfo.com for more.
* New Jersey Gov. Christie Whitman yesterday signed a bill
putting teeth into the state's ban on out-of-state trucks on
secondary roads -- $400 for the first offense, $700 for the
second, and $1,000 for subsequent violations. John Bendel has the story from New Jersey at

* California's largest clean air agency believes state and
federal regulations are moving too slowly to protect public
health and has announced a radical plan to force the rapid
conversion of thousands of trucks to cleaner fuels. For details, go to truckinginfo.com
