Online Retail Giant Amazon
Boosts Stake in Drugstore.com
Dow Jones Newswires

SEATTLE -- Amazon.com Inc. agreed to integrate its shopping services with those of Drugstore.com Inc. and create a drugstore.com shopping "tab" on its Web site.

Amazon Agrees to Acquire Stake in Car-Buying Site Greenlight (Jan. 21)

Under the terms of the agreement, Amazon.com will receive about $105 million from the online drugstore over a three-year period.

Amazon also said it plans to make a $30 million investment in Drugstore.com, bringing its stake in the company to nearly 28%.

The online retail company initially purchased a minority stake in Drugstore.com in August 1988. As of July 28, 1999, Amazon stood as Drugstore.com's largest shareholder with about 11.4 million shares, representing a 26.8% stake.

Amazon said the companies' alliance will allow it to sell drugstore products on its Web site, which furthers its objective to become a diversified online retailer. The pact marks the first time Amazon has agreed to feature an investment partner permanently on its Web site.

On Friday, Amazon agreed to acquire a 5% stake in online car-buying company Greenlight.com. Amazon will promote Greenlight on its site and, along with the stake, will receive $82.5 million over five years. Amazon will also receive warrants to increase its stake to as much as 30% over the period.<<
