>>are we being influenced by what is happening at VLNC or is the general area of "portable" energy sources (fuel cells, high performance batteries) getting noticed suddenly? <<

All those factors, Valence has quadrupled on news of sales for its sole product, bringing attention to lithium battery companies. The current fuel cell madness that has driven PLUG to the moon may be washing over into Valence and Ultralife. Suddenly fuel cells and batteries are sexy again.

There has also been positive company news.
The jury found in their favor in that 25 million dollar lawsuit that was hanging over them, see: biz.yahoo.com
They received a big three year order for smoke alarm batteries. biz.yahoo.com In 1999 their biggest customer, who I believe to be Fyrnetics, ordered $4.192 million and $1.993 million in 1998, so the order represents a substantial increase from this customer. Perhaps the bill requiring 10 year batteries in NY state that passed the State Senate is about to make it out in final legislation.

I also think it is interesting that they are displaying for the first time at Wireless2000, the biggest cell phone industry confabulation in the western hemisphere. messages.yahoo.com

Why would they introduce new model smoke alarm batteries at a cell phone show?

Also, automotive telematics such as GM's Onstar system were well received at the Detroit Auto show. The company has been trying to sell primary batteries for use as backup batteries for automotive telematic systems for the last six months or more. Perhaps they're getting close to a sale in that area. Or maybe the Army is about to order some more batteries for their Land Warrior program. I hope it's more than just spill over from fuel cell madness.

Some notes on the CC:

They expect revenues to be flat to down for the third fiscal quarter which ends March 31, 2000, due to inventory adjustments by their 9 volt customers. They are shipping limited quantities of pre-production lithium polymer batteries, but those shipments will have no material effect on the third quarter.

9 Volt: Small increase in margins in second quarter, larger improvements expected over the next two quarters from their manufacturing plan. Plan to reduce inventories by several million dollars through better planning, etc.

U.K.: Sales up only slightly. Hope to get more military and industrial contracts.

Automotive Telematics: Working actively with multiple unnamed customers. They have done sampling with multiple customers.

Lithium Polymer: They have been designed into some customers products. They are shipping preproduction batteries to those customers now. They will not announce until the end customer is shipping product with Ultralife batteries in them. Full ramp up soon. On track to have an aftermarket cell phone battery on the market in the first half of this calendar year.

Taiwan Joint Venture: Testing equipment from different vendors. Final equipment selection will be in the March - April time frame. Equipment will be installed in August-September time frame. Production starting before the end of this year.
