Gemstar, TV Guide and distribution costs

DS--Re I don't read TV Guide now

I don't either, but I do look at the TV listings in my local newspaper, both daily and Sunday. I see an ebook-powered TV Guide replacing all of the printed listings, and being complementary to the TV Guide channel on cable. The TV Guide channel would give quick channel selection. ebook-TV Guide would give reviews, TV-related news for a small download price.

Re Costs:

I used to work for a local newspaper. Our cost of printing and delivering the paper was virtually the same as our cover price. Ad revenues covered everything else. I seem to remember that this situation is repeated regardless of size of newpaper or periodical.

The point is that electronic distribution will make possible extremely inexpensive subscriptions.

Re: Death of TV

"Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated". While Gilder uses TV's imminent demise to point up the paradigm shift, I don't see it disappearing. There will be a continuing market for real-time release/distribution of media content. People will want to sit down and watch the evening news, or the latest episode of Seinfeld, to be talked about tomorrow at work. And some of these shows are broadcast live. TV Channels will coexist with internet channels for the foreseeable future.
