Maybe I didn't explain that I only deal in the best of companies (DELL, MSFT, LU, CSCO, etc.) and that approach greatly lessens the likelihood that they will go to zero..... profitable companies generally stay in business. Also, I stay distributed to avoid a single killer. Another rule I have is to stay near term on the primary trades (although I do some LEAPS). If a company goes to pot, I stop making trades in it. All of these help to avoid situations like you describe.
