BOMBARDIER PLACES FIRST Q300 WITH AUSTRALIA'S QANTAS AIRWAYS TORONTO, ONTARIO--Bombardier Aerospace announced today that Qantas Airways has placed a firm order for one 50-seat Q300* turboprop on behalf of its wholly owned subsidiary Sunstate Airlines of Brisbane, Australia. The aircraft, the first 50-seat turboprop in Australian regional airline service, will enter revenue service in March 2000, joining the six 36-seat Dash 8(R) Series 100 and Q200* aircraft already in the Sunstate fleet. Sunstate will utilize its new aircraft between Cairns/Horn Island and Townsville/Cairns. "Our requirement for an increase in capacity is a result of growing demand for seats at peak times on the Cairns/Horn Island route," said Ashley Kilroy, general manager of Sunstate Airlines. "The new aircraft will also help us expand our operations around our route network by upgrading the Cairns/Hamilton Island service to daily as well as extending the existing Brisbane/Newcastle route on to Melbourne." With the inclusion of Melbourne, Sunstate's route network along Australia's east coast will be longer than the distance between Gander, Newfoundland, and London, England, and the longest turboprop route network in the world. Delivery of the Sunstate Q300 will increase to 37 the number of Q Series Dash 8 aircraft with Australian carriers.
