PlanetRx.Com Becomes First Online Pharmacy to Fulfill Electronic Prescription; 'E-Prescriptions' Will Save Time and Money, Reduce Prescription-Related Errors
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- PlanetRx.com, Inc. (Nasdaq: PLRX - news; planetrx.com), a leading Internet healthcare destination for commerce, content and community, became the first online pharmacy to fulfill a pharmaceutical prescription transmitted via the Internet, the Company announced today. The script, transmitted electronically using the @Rx(TM) prescription management service developed by the AHT Corporation (Nasdaq: AHTC - news), was sent by a physician in Chicago to PlanetRx.com on January 21, 2000 and dispensed by PlanetRx.com's Memphis, Tennessee pharmacy and distribution center.

@Rx's advanced service enables health care providers with Internet access to securely transmit patient scripts from the physician's office directly to PlanetRx.com for dispensing. Customers receive their medication by mail, in some cases as soon as the following day.

A recent report by the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine revealed that more than 7,000 Americans die each year as a result of medication errors, which include the prescribing or dispensing of the wrong drugs. President Clinton has called on federal health agencies to reduce medical errors by 50% in five years.

''Sending electronic prescriptions over the Internet will save time, help reduce errors caused by illegible handwriting and confusion about drugs that sound alike, and automatically screen for potential drug interactions,'' said William J. Razzouk, chairman and CEO of PlanetRx.com. ''This announcement signals the realization of PlanetRx.com's strategy to integrate innovative technology, including electronic prescriptions, that should lower our operating costs over time and provide our members with the best experience possible.''

Jon Edelson, MD, Chairman, CEO and President of AHT Corporation, said: ''We are delighted to work with PlanetRx.com to further our vision of making the electronic prescription a ubiquitous feature of the health care delivery system. Our state-of-the-art @Rx service is designed to provide prescribers and pharmacists with reliable, authenticated and secure online transactions that save time and reduce the potential for prescription-related errors.''

The @Rx service also allows health care providers to review and maintain patient prescription drug histories, select medications in accordance with formularies, monitor for drug interactions and print out prescriptions and educational handouts for patients.

''Using @Rx took less than 30 seconds from entering the patient's name to selecting the drug and receiving electronic confirmation from PlanetRx.com,'' said Lyle Berkowitz, MD, an Internist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, who sent the first fully Internet prescription from his office in Chicago, Illinois. ''Electronic prescriptions will not only save time, it can prevent handwriting errors, automatically screen for drug interactions and verify formulary compliance, all while the patient is in my office. It is fantastic that I can offer my patients, particularly those with chronic illnesses, the option of sending their prescription electronically, instead of having them trudge to the pharmacy every month for refills, especially on days like today when it is 10 degrees outside in Chicago.''
