Thanks for the link, unclewest. Sorry, I can't help you about determining if there's SiC under the GaN. I've never seen single crystal SiC. The poly SiC that I've seen was black. If I were you I'd ask the manufacturer where they got the LEDs.

Sharper Image also sells key ring lights.

The one I looked at was mini penlight style, had a 10,000 hour LED, lithium battery, and gave bluish-white light. Twist on. I believe it was made in Taiwan.

I couldn't find it on their website. They do show several other models that use high-brightness LEDs. There's the Key Ring with Light and Timer, the Key Organizer with Light, and the Ultra Key Seeker- a clapper key retrieval system.
