I'm guessing a big piece of all this is the Fed taking back a lot of the money that they put out in 4Q '99 as Y2K insurance. M3 was way down last week ($67b if memory serves me right), and is probably still going down as the Fed takes out this excess liquidity.

I really don't think that it's a coincidence that the market went nuts on the upside in 4Q '99, and now may be in the process of going nuts on the downside.
