Hello, young lady! The following has nothing do do with geezers or taxes -- When living in LA, years ago, a producer for Barry/Enright (sp) teased my ex and I into showing up at a cattle call. Seems like close to a hundred people were there. First order of business was a lonnnnng written test. When those were collected, all of us had to stand, introduce ourselves and say a few words. Based on test scores and producer notes re??, people were slotted for particular B/E game shows (I think there were four at the time). They called my ex back for Jokers' and me for "Tic Tac Dough" (beginning of the end for us I suppose). Then, there were several interviews with producers (during which you revealed more about yourself and mapped out all the banter that would take place on the show). Those surviving were brought in to play practice games. I was impressed at the effort taken to ensure actual contestants could -- 1. Answer the questions, 2. Be relied on to not freeze-up, 3. Have fun doing the show and especially, still be pleasant and look like they were having fun after getting their ass kicked. One of the fellows in the "green room" on taping day had previously been on Jeopardy and said the drill was pretty similar (who knows what it is now). Bottom line -- my ex won a few hundred dollars and several tons of some brand of pasta. She got bounced on an EASY question (I should've jettisoned her, right there). My brush with easy money was aborted by a series of tie games when I was next up to challenge the winner. These shows were taped all day and into the night for two or three days running -- there was a different group for each of the taping sessions and if you didn't get in the game on your day, you weren't scheduled to return for a couple of months. In my case, I moved to Tokyo about a month later. Had I gotten on before the end of the day and won, I would have carried over to the next day's taping and could have done several weeks (on five nights a week) of shows. Damn shame. When I was younger, I knew everything! I have wondered for years (does any one know?) whether Jeopardy contestants influence the categories that are chosen. I've always thought they must -- I'm a whiz at Jeopardy, but there is the occasional show where the categories leave me without a clue. I don't think Jeopardy would take a chance of putting clueless contestants on the air. FWIW, there are basically three kinds of game shows. Ones where the winner is determined by skill or knowledge, ones where the winner is determined by luck, and, ones where the whole point is to make fun of the contestants (I know for a fact that not all couples on the Newlywed Game were still couples when their episode hit the air). Well, that's what I know about game shows, Liz. Oh, you didn't ask? Sorry. Mike
