1/24/00 Expanding its digital platform overseas, Scientific-Atlanta (Atlanta) says it has a contract to supply digital set-top boxes to NTL, the UK?s largest cable operator.
The agreement calls for a delivery of a minimum of 250,000 set-tops over a three-year period. Scientific-Atlanta will develop a new European digital set-top based on the Explorer 3000, the next generation of its Explorer 2000 box with double the memory and CPU speed of its predecessor and optional hard drive.

The set-top will be compatible with the European DVB standard and will include a tuner compatible with PAL. In addition, the set-top will feature a smart card slot capable of accepting alternative conditional access implementations.

Based in Hampshire, UK, NTL will have approximately 2.8 million customers in the UK and Ireland when it completes its acquisition of Cable and Wireless. NTL will use the Power TV?s operating system for its interactive platform. Power TV is a majority owned subsidiary of Scientific-Atlanta. NTL?s largest digital cable box supplier is UK-based Pace Micro.
