Bob - Re: "Lowering AMD chips will only furthur cement the cheap image that AMD has acquired with the K series chips. Why "K" - its synonymous with Kmart and the cheap Chrysler K series"

Well said.

AMD - The Kmart alternative to the Intel Nieman Marcus.

Bob, RE <What is the logic of starting a price war if your competitor can produce more efficiently than you can.>

AMD is not waging a price war! It's just executing its business strategy to gain market share given its leverages and advantages. If AMD IS waging a price war and trying to kill INTC instead of maximizing shareholder values, I'll clear my positions and kiss goodby. It's just not the case!!!

Bob,

What you are missing is that AMD are reducing the profit margin on their most profitable chips by perhaps 40% in order to treble the number of chips that they sell. You do the calculation.

Also note that the calculation does not take into account the huge benefits of a more substantial AMD presence in the market.

Bob I believe you are missing a very important part of
finance 101. At 4q-99 cc Jerry said that AMD was low on inventory
with k-6 but had 300k athlons. So like any retailer you lower the
prices on product you wish to sell. This also has the advantage of raising
AMD'S asps and will actually make more money . If you have a spreadsheet
do the numbers.
Also by raising demand for high mhz chips;because Intel is high mhz chip challenged; AMD should pick up the lion's share of <high mhz chip sales.

Re:"Why "K" - its synonymous with Kmart and the cheap Chrysler K series"

Bob,

Bad analogy. Look at the history of Chrysler and the impact that the introduction of the K-cars had on the most successful corporate turnaround since the industrial revolution.
