Hello gpowell,

"Are you suggesting that ATHM become a Terrestrial Internet Trunk?"

I might have, up until now, been suggesting such a thing, but it appears that someone else has already chosen to fill that role. -g- (See the preceding InfoWorld article re the utility consortium with HP and ORCL.)

BTW, it's difficult for me to discern your bias from your one line question. For the purpose of this reply, I'll assume that you don't approve of such a prospect as I've suggested.

Seriously, terming what I've proposed in the manner in which you did really doesn't do justice to the task. While network stupidity is actually desirable from a user perspective (in the sense of Isenberg's stupid network model), the need for intelligent measures using the proper architectural approaches results in something appreciably more than a mere "terrestrial trunk."

But in effect, I'd have to answer "yes," if we dispense with the murky details and speak strictly in higher level object terms. If not, then what's the alternative at the other end of the spectrum? Becoming a full content shop, paying maximum freight for the privilege of using other peoples' lines for hauling greeting cards? All the time attempting to ensure a first-page strategy that by now eveyone has already learned how to avoid?

There would be a great deal of expertise required by anyone who opened up the spigots in order to handle tomorrow's tsunami. I wouldn't minimize the prospect of deliverig such a platform product in its final form.
