Study names Cisco top ISP choice for DSL

Max Smetannikov, Inter@ctive Week

ISPs are most likely to choose Cisco Systems as their preferred Digital Subscriber Line vendor, a study by Cahners In-Stat Group found

Out of 186 Internet service provider (ISP) executives knowledgeable of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) rollout plans, 44 percent said they are most likely to choose Cisco as an equipment vendor. The finding doesn't come as a shock, since the study has been measuring Cisco's "mindshare" with ISPs and historically the router maker had one of the strongest brands in the ISP world.

"This is an important finding in light of the recent line-sharing ruling by the FCC [Federal Communications Commission], since now you will see more ISPs moving into CLEC [competitive local exchange carrier] space by getting colocation agreements with ILECs [incumbent local exchange carriers," said Enzo Signore, Cisco's director of product marketing.

Cisco is a relative newcomer to the DSL space; it started shipping DSL products only 15 months ago.

The second most popular DSL vendor chosen by ISP executives was Ascend Communications -- which is now owned by Lucent Technologies -- at 26 percent. Other companies included in the poll were AccessLan Communications, Advanced Fiber Communications, Alcatel, Copper Mountain Networks, Fujitsu/Orkit, PairGain Technologies and Westel.

Nortel announces earnings today. Unlike LU, I'm sure NT won't disappoint. Face it, this is now a two horse race.
