From the WSJ reporting on PC sales...
interactive.wsj.com

<<.....Tougher competition has opened an increasingly widening gap between the PC industry's leading makers and their sluggish rivals. Dell and H-P had a banner fourth quarter, with world-wide growth rates of more than 45%, IDC reported. H-P grew even faster than Dell in the U.S. and world-wide, although its global market share remains 7.5%, behind Dell's 10%. Dell also led PC sales in the U.S. for the second quarter in a row and, for the first time, beat out Compaq for the U.S. sales title for the entire year.

Compaq continued to struggle with a restructuring of its distribution system and eked out 8% world-wide growth for the quarter. While Compaq continues to lead global sales, its market share dropped to 13.7% from 15.1%, IDC said. IBM, too, suffered from its decision to withdraw from retail-PC sales in the U.S., resulting in a 6% decline in its fourth-quarter shipments and a two-point drop in global-market share to 7.6% from 9.6%.

Gateway Inc., San Diego, remained roughly stable at about a 9% share of the U.S. market, where it makes most of its sales, the research firms said. Apple's U.S. share rose to 5.1% from 4.4%, Dataquest said, and Apple, Cupertino, Calif., edged out Gateway in global sales, 4.2% to 4.1%......>
