I just hope that the coming economic catastrophe does not lead to foolish military policies. That's what usually happens. A war takes people's minds off the way the politicians have screwed up the economy.

A war also is an opportunity to pillage... when the American people are tapped out and there is no one willing to lend to us, we can always use our military might to take someone else's wealth. Consider the Gulf War, for example.

T, Orwell knew all about using the military to cover up social and economic problems. It is scary, but it often seems to be the easiest card to play for the pols.
