The consensus profit estimate from First Call/Thomson Financial, which tracks analyst predictions, is for 16 cents a share. But JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ:JDSU)(TSE:JDU) is widely expected to maintain its recent trend and better that number when it reports after the market's close.

Whisper estimates put the profit at 18 cents per share.

Is it just me, or is anyone else getting fed up with this new term, "whisper estimate"? What kind of moron came up with this concept? Is it no longer good enough for a company to meet expectations? In this case, would it not make more sense to say that the earnings expectation was $0.18 per share instead of $0.16 since aparently nobody expects it to simply meet expectations?

I just think it's ridiculous that if JDSU has earnings of $0.16 per share that it would inevitably be seen as a disappointment because of the "whisper" numbers.

What a CROCK!!!

Sorry for the rant...
