From RB thread:BLOWOUT NEWS FROM JAPAN: This looks like great news, more that Dr. J can comment on during the conf. call. By: fromthefuture Reply To: None Monday, 24 Jan 2000 at 11:37 PM EST Post # of 19102 Blowout news from JAPAN! SAN DIEGO - January 20, 2000 - QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that its MSM3000[tm] chipset and high-speed packet data (HSPD) software solution is featured in the handsets developed by several Japanese manufacturers for the 64 kilobits per second (kbps) high-speed packet data service jointly launched on Japan?s nationwide cdmaOne[tm] network by DDI CORPORATION and IDO CORPORATION on January 7, 2000. "We are very pleased that the proven high-speed packet data solution was delivered by QUALCOMM to manufacturers on time," said Tamasuke Ohmori, director and general manager, Product Department, at IDO CORPORATION. "Through QUALCOMM?s efforts, several handsets that link to the Internet at speeds of up to 64 kbps are ready for our cdmaOne high-speed packet data service. This packet communication technology gives us a head start toward the coming wireless-data century." "After a year of collaboration between QUALCOMM, network operators, wireless handset manufacturers and infrastructure vendors, we can now provide a high-speed packet data system, as well as handsets, that are smaller, lighter, and offer longer stand-by time," said Hiroshi Sakai, director and general manager of the Mobile Communications Engineering Division, Engineering Group, at DDI CORPORATION. "With this achievement, our cdmaOne system will allow us to provide an exclusive service that will lead into IMT-2000." "After helping our partners in Japan launch their first nationwide cdmaOne network last year, QUALCOMM is proud to continue participating with Japan?s wireless communication leaders in launching the next generation of high-speed packet data services and products," said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "We are committed to a partnership that will drive wireless communications into this new century." Selected for its superior performance and industry-leading features, the MSM3000 chipset and system software represents the first solution available in production quantities to support IS-95B mobile protocol revision four, featuring data rates of up to 86.4 kbps, providing wireless handset manufacturers and network operators the ability to deliver high-speed wireless Internet access anywhere. Release 3.0 of the MSM3000 system software - which included support for HSPD - shipped on time in May 1999. Version 4.0 of the software shipped in December 1999. Version 4.0 includes features such as voice enhancements, improved handoff, call setup, roaming indication, incoming call forwarding, neighbor searching and pilot reporting. The solution includes a full interoperability specification for infrastructure requirements and provides complete training and technical support to ensure manufacturers can quickly add HSPD to their existing MSM3000-based handsets without requiring new or additional hardware. In addition to the MSM3000 system software, QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies began sample shipments of its next generation MSM3100[tm] CDMA chipset and system software in September 1999. The MSM3100 solution supports data rates of up to 86.4 kbps and features a 50 percent reduction in the printed circuit board area and a 50 percent increase in stand-by time (to an estimated 300 hours in CDMA mode with a 650 mAh battery).
