But, it's not LIKE AOL... it has a dry look to it and isn't very fun to use...

The dry look is inherent in the narrowband to a browser model. They are *all* dry compared to AOL's closed network that allows for predownloding the graphics.

Think broadband. Suddenly it all changes! AOL's prime advantage is toast.

I hope Excite learns that the *feel* is at least as important as the function. Being the only broadband portal they may grab a lot of people attracted to a more pleasing environment to function in.

Knowing Excite it will start out lame, but have a lot of customization options, something you don't see on AOL.

Run the Gambit of sites and this month in Yahoo Mag, Feb 2000, they list on page 168, Excite Newstracker [nt.excite.com] as the best online news aggregator. So what? I agree with your dry analogy, but they have covered the bases for access to material and as Eric noted, will hopefully be the first with a quick evolution to impressive BB, fun, feely, sticky, graphical interaction.
