A healthy relationship is one marked by mutual compatibility and the joy of sharing in the project of life long living. The church/state attempts to define the roles that lead most naturally to the benefit of the individuals as well as harmony in the community; the state in a legalistic sense and the church in a moralistic sense. I think I agree with you that once the lines are drawn there is an opportunity for one or both partners to abuse their defined role toward the oppression of the other. It is up to each of us who choose to participate in matrimonial vows, therefore, to have enough confidence and self respect to discipline our selves in a healthy way to maintain the delicate balance of this charished companionship for the benefit of self, partner, and community;.....or not.
