IMO there is plenty of incentive to manipulate large cap stocks short term. Stocks go up and down on their stories in the short term as much as they do their fundamentals.
Negative spins on a company's stock can cause significant variations in price. This is undoubtedly true because we have any number of stocks go up exponentially on their stories which were later found to be contrived. Whereupon the stocks crashed and were delisted.

Isn't this how politicians get elected.<G>
