Bob, Sure wish PS2 used regular drams
instead of RAMBUS.

Good point. Did Sony consider the low pin count or the higher bandwidth most when they chose RDRAM? Maybe Sony will buy the slower 600 Mb/sec data rate ones at discount.

Rambus should not be a problem for PSII - I seriously doubt they have any variable spot price contract on it. The price was nailed down way before this, probably as early as >1 1/2 years ago when they designed it in. Same with the Toshiba/Sony CPU/graphic chip and the super duper LSI I/O chip.

Biggest factor IMHO will the be how fast they can ramp the yields on the 0.18um CPU/graphic chip. The faster they can ramp that thing in the fab, the faster you'll see PSII released to the US market. As an example, 2 Qs ago Intel has minor problems ramping their 0.18um and took one Q to straighten it out.

My own guesstimate is the original Sept launch schedule for US was very conservative. Their fab engineers should be able to beat that by 2 to 3 months. If I were Sony, I'll be trying my best to release it during early summer. No need to compete with back to school dollars.
