Bids For Australian Extra Network Capacity
RDSL
25 January 2000
Telstra, Cable & Wireless Optus, and Vodafone Pacific (all Australia), all principal mobile phone operators, have started bidding for extra network capacity on the 1.8GHz band in the five largest Australian cities.

The tender process may also attract four other companies, including Hutchison (Hong Kong) and Siemens (Germany), which is believed to have joined forces with AAPT (Australia), carrier owned by Telecom New Zealand.

The number of cellular phone users rose to more than 7.5 million people in December 1999, for an around 40% market penetration. The Australian Communications Authority, industry regulator, is selling the spectrum slots, which are expected to cost much more than at the time of the last auction in August 1998.
