If my memory serves me correctly...and it might not. I recall that the problem arises from the cells not specifically formatted for numberic. If the general format is used in the cell, numbers are read as numbers and empty cells are read as text. Hopefully, it would be straightforward to set the format of the cells to numeric in which case the empty cells are read as a zero. Hope that isn't a problem.
