Merrill Lynch at 100 by spring. Merrill said it hit record revenue in two of its core businesses:
commissions, which rose 22 percent in the fourth quarter to $1.7 billion;
and, investment banking rose 37 percent to $1.1 billion. However, trading
revenue, at $794 million, was below third quarter levels.

Assets watch

Merrill said that net new money, or U.S. client assets, totaled $36 billion
in the quarter, which amounted to a rate of over $500 million a
day. Assets under management, or those funds Merrill oversees in mutual
funds and 401(k)s, rose 8 percent in the fourth quarter to $557 billion.
